How to Play Chess

  • White moves first. Players alternate turns.
  • Click a piece to select it, then click a valid square to move.
  • Pawns move forward one square (two on first move), capture diagonally, and promote to Queen/Rook/Bishop/Knight on the last rank.
  • Knights move in an L-shape (two squares in one direction, then one square perpendicular).
  • Bishops move any number of squares diagonally.
  • Rooks move any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
  • Queen moves any number of squares in any direction (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal).
  • King moves one square in any direction. The game ends when a king is checkmated.
  • Special rules: Castling (king and rook move simultaneously), En Passant (special pawn capture).
  • Win by checkmating your opponent's king.
  • Draws can occur by stalemate (no legal moves, but king not in check), 50-move rule (50 moves without a pawn move or capture), or insufficient material.
