How to Play Chess
- White moves first. Players alternate turns.
- Click a piece to select it, then click a valid square to move.
- Pawns move forward one square (two on first move), capture diagonally, and promote to Queen/Rook/Bishop/Knight on the last rank.
- Knights move in an L-shape (two squares in one direction, then one square perpendicular).
- Bishops move any number of squares diagonally.
- Rooks move any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
- Queen moves any number of squares in any direction (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal).
- King moves one square in any direction. The game ends when a king is checkmated.
- Special rules: Castling (king and rook move simultaneously), En Passant (special pawn capture).
- Win by checkmating your opponent's king.
- Draws can occur by stalemate (no legal moves, but king not in check), 50-move rule (50 moves without a pawn move or capture), or insufficient material.
